Q & A

EMPLOYER REQUESTING BACKGROUND CHECK PRIOR TO CONDITIONAL OFFER.

QUESTION: I'm concerned because a potential employer requested that I fill out a seven year history background check prior to even giving me a conditional job offer. I researched if this is legal and it depends on the state but since it's an online job I don't think that is relevant. I researched to see if I was scammed but as far as I can tell it is legitimate. But I was supposed to hear back by now and haven't. I called last week and they said they there was no update to my application yet and it should be soon but their decision isn't based on the background check. So I don't understand why they are doing one. Does this make sense to you? Donna B.

ANSWER: There is no need for concern if you have done your research and are convinced you are dealing with a legitimate company. Remember, companies have the right to request a background check on anyone who is applying to a position with them. They can do it prior to your offer or they can request it after. Just remember, background checks can take a while to return data. If they hire you before the background check returns and later discover you have something on your background that violates their expectations of employees, you will be terminated immediately. Some employers just choose to do it in the early phase of the onboarding process to have it out of the way in hopes of getting the report back before your official hire date.

Wishing you all the best in your journey!!!
